PRESS RELEASE
NEW INVESTMENT KEEPS KPMF AHEAD IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Kay Premium Marking Films has invested £1/2 million
in a new thermal oxidiser to clean the exhaust air stream
and incinerate solvent emissions from the self-adhesives casting
and coating line at its manufacturing plant in Newport, South
Wales.
The new installation, which employs state-of-the-art regenerative
technology, replaces KPMF's original incinerator and ensures
the company continues to comply with tightening UK and EU
emission regulations.
Planned in close collaboration with Caerphilly County Borough
Council, the unit was officially commissioned in November
by Phillip Davy, the council's head of economic development
and tourism, accompanied by senior project officer, Antony
Bolter.
"We are delighted that Mr Davy and Mr Bolter were able
to join in celebrating what is, for us, a major re-affirmation
of our commitment to the wellbeing of our community and the
environment in which we all live," says KPMF's managing
director, Gary Thompson. "Throughout our 13 years in
South Wales, we have made a point of being at the forefront
in our industry when it comes to environmental protection
systems and the new oxidisation plant - like our achievement
of ISO 14001 - is a tangible symbol of this."
Developed in Italy and designed specifically for use by the
coating and printing industries, the Eurocad Regenerative
Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) is the first of its kind to be employed
by a manufacturer of self-adhesive vinyls. Installed by Thermotec
Systems of Slough, it takes the exhaust air stream (13,000
Nm³/hr) from the adhesive coating process and elevates
it from approximately 160°c to 750°c to remove virtually
all of the VOCs from the airstream.
The RTO incorporates a patented valving system which passes
the air through ceramic heat exchangers thus recovering the
energy released from the solvent laden air stream. To make
the whole system more energy efficient, excess heat energy
released from the coating solvents is passed through a secondary
air/thermal oil heat exchanger, thus providing all of the
thermal energy required for the coating processes.

According to KPMF's operations director, Derek Brindley, the
RTO consumes only 50 per cent of the gas required for the
company's original oxidiser, yet has the capacity to process
twice the volume of air. "Plans are also underway to
improve energy efficiency even further by continuously monitoring
our process conditions and modifying gas consumption accordingly,"
he says. "Longer term, we hope also to use the waste
heat to help heat factory during the winter months."
Kay Premium Marking Films Ltd is the UK's only manufacturer
of the high-grade cast vinyl films specified by the automotive
industry for vehicle decoration and used for sign-making and
other graphic applications. It is the sole self-adhesive films
manufacturer in the world to achieve the stringent ISO/TS
16949 quality management system standard and since 2001 has
held ISO-14001 accreditation for its environmental management
systems.
