Luminescence breakthrough by kpmf brings first flexible, printable self-adhesive
film for “glow in the dark” signs and labels

A breakthrough in the application of luminescent chemistry by Kay Premium Marking Films has netted a uniquely versatile vehicle for the production of low-cost safety wayfinder signs and emergency equipment labels.

Exploiting its specialised vinyl casting and coating expertise, KPMF has created the first fully flexible and conformable film that offers the “glow-in-the-dark” luminous property which previously could be obtained only in rigid substrate form.

In addition to its unique conformability, the new luminescent film offers also, of course, all of the other accepted benefits to sign and label makers of cast vinyl. It is self-adhesed, it is straightforward to print, either digitally or by screen process, and it can be readily cut on a plotter, platen, or by hand.

“When you think about it, marrying luminescence to a self-adhesive marking film is such a blindingly obvious concept that one wonders it wasn’t done years ago,” says KPMF’s operations director, Derek Brindley. “A fully flexible luminous film is so much easier to convert and more versatile to use than a rigid substrate, that it should prove a winner for all sorts of wayfinder signs and emergency equipment labels.”

A bonus advantage of K74100 Luminescent Cast Vinyl – as the film is designated by KPMF – is
its relative whiteness. Most luminescent materials have a rather sickly green tinge to them which is apparent even in daylight. The new KPMF film glows a bright green in the dark, but has a pleasant ivory appearance in the light.

K74100 Luminescent Cast Vinyl combines a 130 micron facefilm, offering a 10-year outdoor life, with 150 gsm polyethylene release liner specifically designed to facilitate digital printing from the roll. The adhesive is the multi-purpose permanent acrylic formulation which KPMF employs for all of its cast vinyl products.
